HISTORICALLY
Historically, TRICHY’S prosperity was linked to the future of the South India’s various dynasties. Trichy was the CHOLA citadel during the SANGAM AGE. Its cultural heritage goes back 2000 years. KARIGALA CHOLAN-I (founder of the Chola dynasty) was the ruler of this particular area before 2000 years. He has built the KALLANAI (stone dam) in the River Cauvery. Still the dam exists.
Situated in the banks of River Cauvery, Trichy was ruled by Cholas and Pallavas. Although this city was generally associated with the Cholas and Pallavas, Pandians and Nayaks have also left their imprint - changing hands from time to time. The Old City and it’s Fort, as it stands today, was built by Nayaks of Madurai.
During Carnatic wars of the 18th century Trichy was often in the forefront of events. This Carnatic wars between the BRITISH and the FRENCH were fought around the Fort. Today at the OBAMA AGE the city is blend of history and tradition, pilgrim centre, tourist spot as well as thriving commercial and industrial city.
